What Is Shuffleboard?

Shuffleboard, also known as shovelboard, is a game played where you push disks with a long-handled cue over a marked surface. There are different variations of shuffleboard including outdoor and also tabletop.

Basic Rules (Tabletop)

When you’re a beginner, there are some basic rules you’ll want to learn to play shuffleboard. These are just rules for the beginning, and there’s always more to learn as well.

Counting Pucks

Before starting the game, it’s important that the pucks are counted and then put visibly into the trough. When it’s your turn to shuffle, you should only have one puck in your hand.

There should be no puck in your non-shooting hand.

No Shaking the Table

If you’re playing tabletop shuffleboard, you’re allowed to lean against the table with your non-shooting hand, but never shake or move the table. If you do this you’ll receive a 1-point penalty, and the violating player will shoot first in the next round.

Shooting first is a disadvantage in shuffleboard.

No Distracting Opponents

In the game of shuffleboard, you’re not allowed to distract your opponent. When you’ve shot your puck, you’re supposed to stand behind your opponent.

Feet Placement

You need at least one foot behind the table. You’re allowed to support your weight on the cradle and lean forward, but keep one foot behind the table at all times.

Playing Surface

You’re not allowed to touch the playing surface when you shuffle. You’re not supposed to touch the playing surface when it’s your opponent’s turn either.

If you see a dry spot, during your turn you’re allowed to add powder onto that dry patch.

How to Start

There are 3 scoring zones on the long wooden plank. A coin toss is often used to determine who goes first. Each team will also have a different color for pucks.

If you’re playing 2-player, you’ll each have 4 pucks to shoot. You must slide or shuffle your pucks to the other side of the table without it leaving the table.

You’ll take turns shooting a puck until you’ve both gone through all 8 pucks.

Deciding Who Goes First

The winner of the coin flip decides if they want to go first or second. It’s always to your advantage to go second. You can have different rounds, and the person who scores the highest in the first round goes first the next round.

How to Win

To win at shuffleboard, the aim is a large factor. You’ll want your puck to land at the furthest end of the table without ever leaving the table. When the game is over, to determine who won, you’ll count the pucks that are closest to the end of the table.

If a puck isn’t in a scoring zone entirely then it doesn’t count.

Can You Go Over With Scoring?

Some games go to 15 or 21 points for scoring, but it depends on what score you and your opponent decide. If there’s a tie then neither team wins. The first to get exactly 15 or 21 points without going over wins.

Outdoor Shuffleboard

A shuffleboard court is long and rectangular with scoring areas on each end. The line across the court is considered the baseline. The area that’s from the baseline to the end is considered the shooting area.

You can do a coin flip to see who goes first, and take turns with whose turn it is. You’ll each slide disks, alternatively.

Say you have black and yellow disks, the 4 yellow disks are put within the right of the 10-off area. The 4 black are placed on the left of the 10-off area.

Each disk has to be played with a cue and sliding motion and finish in the scoring triangle. If your disk doesn’t reach the furthest deadline, then it’s removed from the game.

If a disk goes off the edge at all then it’s removed from play as well. You’ll want to use strategy and push your opponent’s disks off the board.

Penalties

If the disk touches the sideline or side of the triangle while being played, then it’s -10. If a player’s body goes beyond the baseline or touches the baseline while playing, -10.

If you shoot an opponent’s disk that’s -10. A disk that touches the 10 off area before being played, -5.

Scoring

Outdoor shuffleboard is played on a 52-foot table. Each side has a scoring triangle. Each triangle has scoring zones with ten at the top, then 8, 7, and then the 10-off area. If you land in the 10-off area, that’s minus 10 points since it’s a penalty zone.

If your puck touches the line then it’s minus 5 points.

How To Win Game Pigeon Shuffleboard Game

Scoring happens after all 8 disks are played. A disk has to be within one of the 5 areas and not touching the outside lines to score that amount. Disks that are past the 10-off area are ignored.

The first person to reach 75 points wins.
