Archie Evart Himebaugh
August 2, 1911 - October 22, 2004

Archie Evart Himebaugh, age 93, of Winn, Michigan, died Friday, October 22, 2004 at his home in rural Winn. Evart was born August 2, 1911 in Winn, Michigan, the son of William and Elsie (Moore) Himebaugh. On May 1, 1933, he and Pauline Delo were married at Elkhart, Indiana. Pauline preceded him in death on August 5, 1981 and his daughter, Joanne preceded him in death on June 16, 1999. He married Doris (Spitzer) Alfredson on August 17, 1999 in Bradenton, Florida.
Evart was owner and President of Economy Mills, Inc. in Elwell, MI and Perrinton Elevator Company in Perrinton, MI. He sold Economy Mills to J. P. Burroughs and Sons, Inc. in 1968 and became their Director of Marketing. He retired in 1972. He was active in the Michigan Bean Shippers Association, the Michigan Grain and Feed Association, the National Grain and Feed Association, and the National Dry Bean Council.
Evart is survived by his wife, Doris of Mt. Pleasant; a sister and her husband, Corrine and Harvey Mac McGinnis of Mecosta; a son in law, Don Slachta of Saginaw; two grand daughters, Marcella Hecht of Vassar, MI and Moreen Slachta of Saginaw; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; and a daughter, Joanne Slachta.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 28, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Nancy Casey Fulton officiating. Interment followed at Union cemetery in Fremont Township, Isabella County, Michigan. Memorial contributions were suggested to Hospice of Central Michigan.

Helen May Davis
June 21, 1913 - October 17, 2004

Helen May Davis, age 91, of Green Valley, Arizona, passed away on Sunday, October 17, 2004 at the St. Marys Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. Helen was born on June 21, 1913 in Noble County, Indiana, the daughter of Joseph Frick and Lillian Brill. On June 21, 1937, she married Virgil W. Davis in Sturgis, Michigan. Virgil preceded her in death on June 25, 1996.
Helen lived in Mount Pleasant until 1996, when she relocated to South Pasadena, Florida. She remained active in the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel while in Florida. Helen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church (USA) of Mount Pleasant. She moved to the Silver Springs Retirement community located in Green Valley, Arizona in January 2004 to be near her family.
She was a receptionist for Dr. William Hersee of Mount Pleasant and then became secretary for the Chemistry Department at Central Michigan University for ten years prior to her retirement in June 1978.

Helen is survived by her son, Virgil Davis, Jr and his wife, Constance Davis, of Green Valley, Arizona. She is also survived by two grandchildren: Virgil Davis III, a physician in Arcata, California, and Stephanie (Davis) Potter and her husband, Dean Potter, both leading national rock climbing ambassadors for Patagonia and residing in Moab, Utah.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 23, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. the First Presbyterian Church (USA) of Mount Pleasant with Rev. Mary Ann Evans-Justin officiating. Interment took place at Riverside cemetery, Alma, Michigan. Memorial contributions were suggested to the First Presbyterian Church (USA) of Mount Pleasant.

Laura 'Betty' Elizabeth Lentz
August 18, 1920 - October 14, 2004

Laura 'Bety' Elizabeth Lentz, age 84, of Shepherd, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, October 14, 2004 at Edward W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. Betty was born on August 18, 1920 in Isabella County, the daughter of Howard and Lillian (Heinz) Noble. On August 29, 1939, she married Harry F. Lentz in Ithaca, Michigan. Harry preceded her in death on August 14, 1998.
Betty was a lifetime area resident, a member of Strickland Baptist Church and enjoyed her life as a homemaker. For a short time, she worked at Central Michigan University as a housekeeper.
She is survived by her children, Shirley Crowley of Clare, and Phil and Patricia Lentz of Shepherd. A brother, Dale and Margaret Noble of Shepherd, and a sister, Jeanne Best of Houghton Lake, MI. Also survived by 3 grandchildren: Tracie Lentz, Mike Crowley and Doug Crowley, 4 great grandchildren: Joe, Jessica, Logan, and Samantha. Laura was preceded in death by her husband, both parents, a sister Donna Zuker, and a brother, Cy Noble.
Funeral services were held on Monday, October 18, 2004 at 11 a.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Lindow Koop of the Strickland Baptist Church officiating. Interment took place in Union cemetery, Winn, Michigan. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Pardee Cancer Treatment Fund of Isabella County or to Community Cancer Services.

Donna L. Armstrong
January 20, 1937 - October 9, 2004

Donna Lucille Armstrong, age 67, of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday morning, October 9, 2004 at her home. Donna was born January 20, 1937 in Isabella County, Michigan, the daughter of Jess and Winifred (Pasco) Shaner.
On November 17, 1955, she and Robert Armstrong were married . Donna was a beautiful cake maker and quilt maker. She was a homemaker that babysat for many children in Mt. Pleasant and she loved to shop.
Donna is survived by her husband, Robert of Mt. Pleasant; her five children and their spouses, Margaret and Henry White of Rosebush, Cindy and Brian Johansen of Paris, MI, Robert and Mary Armstrong of Rosebush, Sandra and David Hovey of Roundrock, Texas, and Merle and Marla Armstrong of Belmont, MI; thirteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers, Alvie Shaner of Clare and Robert (Carolyn) Shaner of Rosebush; a sister in law, Coranna Kripa of Mt. Pleasant; and two special friends, Shirley Davis of Mt. Pleasant and Carol Zileski of Mt. Pleasant. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers and sister, Stanley, Kenneth, Louie, and twins, Margaret and Merle.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Lisa Boettcher officiating. Interment followed at Gilmore Township cemetery in Isabella County, Michigan. Memorial contributions were suggested to Hospice of Central Michigan or Community Cancer Services.

Mattie L. Hoggs
March 9, 1944 - October 2, 2004

Mattie L. Hoggs, age 60, a long time resident of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan died on Saturday, October 2, 2004 at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant. Mattie Lee Hoggs was born to John and Nellie (Hoskins) Pierce on March 9, 1944 in Prattville, Alabama. She married Willie Howard Hoggs on December 16, 1960 in Detroit, Michigan. She was a resident of the Mt. Pleasant area since 1973.
Mattie was a devoted wife and mother and grandmother, and one of Jehovahs Witnesses. She loved her family and friends very much. She enjoyed fishing, cooking for her family, sports, shopping, and taking care of her grandchildren.
Mattie is survived by her parents, John Pierce of Dayton, Ohio and Nellie Pierce of Detroit. Her husband, Willie, and seven children: Willie and Shawn Hoggs of Lansing, MI, Ramona Hoggs of Plymouth, MI, Bonita and James Jewell of Mt. Pleasant, Melanie Hoggs of Mt. Pleasant, Donella Hoggs of Saginaw, and Eric Hoggs of New Mexico. Nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Three sisters: Anna May Pierce of Detroit, Amanda Davis of Detroit, and Nancy Harris of Mt. Pleasant; two brothers: John Pierce of Mt. Pleasant and Earnest Pierce of Detroit.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, October 10, 2004 at 4 p.m. from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses, 8065 E. Broadway, Mt. Pleasant with Mr. Frank Wright officiating. Friends and family are all welcome at the memorial service. Following Matties wishes, cremation has taken place.

Virgie L. Eismann
December 24, 1915 - September 22, 2004

Virgie L. Eismann, age 88, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility. She was born on December 24, 1915 in Deerfield Township, Isabella County, Michigan, the daughter of Percy and Lillie (Guhling) Reed. On June 22, 1935, she married Victor Eismann in Ithaca, Michigan.
Virgie was employed as a clerk for 12 years at the Student Book Exchange on the campus of Central Michigan University. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and reading. She lived most of her life in the area.
Survivors include her daughter and husband, Nancy and Jack Theisen of Weidman; a granddaughter and her husband, Janet and John Putvin of Cadillac; a sister, Reva Reed of Farwell; and two nephews and their wives, R.T. and Pat Paullin of Houghton Lake and Danny and Judy Paullin of Harrison. Virgie was preceded in death by her husband on October 9, 1997, and her parents.
Funeral services were held on Friday, September 24, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Nancy Casey Fulton officiating. Interment took place in Riverside cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Memorial contributions were suggested to Hospice of Central Michigan.

Roy E. Omans
June 10, 1914 - September 18, 2004

Roy E. Omans, age 90, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2004 at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant. Roy was born on June 10, 1914 in Isabella County, Michigan, the son of Clarence and Pearl (Greenfield) Omans. In August 1942, he married the former Lilah Marie Wallace in Shepherd. Marie preceded Roy in death in 1985.
Roy was employed as a custodian for Central Michigan University for many years. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He spent most of his life in the Mt. Pleasant area.
Survivors include 2 daughters: Virginia Omans and Barbara and Robert Coldwell, all of Mt. Pleasant; a sister, Vera Roose of Ionia; 3 grandchildren: John (Angela) Coldwell, Jim (Angella) Coldwell, and Ron Coldwell; 4 great grandchildren: Joel, Alissa, Meagan, and Erin. Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, and brothers Cecil, Lee Otis, and Fay, along with sisters Crystal, and Alice.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at 11 a.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Mr. Mark Christian and Mr. Ivan Odor officiating. Interment took place in Riverside cemetery, beside his wife, Marie. Memorial contributions were suggested to the First Church of Christ.

Gordon Ducky Howard Jackson, Sr.
April 9, 1939 - September 15, 2004

Gordon Ducky Howard Jackson, Sr., age 65. of Weidman, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at Edward W. Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan after open heart surgery. Gordon was born on April 9, 1939 in Rosebush, Michigan, the son Arthur and Ida (Johnson) Jackson. On May 24, 1975, he married Beverly Bailey at the Chippewa Indian United Methodist Church.
Ducky was a retired custodian for Gordon Food Services for many years. He also worked for Clarke Equipment, where he read blue prints, and put the first Bobcat together. He was a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, enjoyed traveling to different casinos. He collected miniature semi truck models, and had almost a complete collection of Marlboro memorabilia. He was a resident of the area until 1964, when he resided in Grand Rapids, moving back to Weidman in 1994. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1960 -1964.
Survivors include his wife Beverly, 4 sons: Gordon Jackson, Jr. of Hasting, MI, Arthur and Jodi Jackson of Mt. Pleasant, Terry Lee Jackson, and Harry Jackson, both of Weidman, and William L. Loonsfoot, who was considered a son; 4 daughters: Bonnie Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Elizabeth Jackson, all of Mt. Pleasant, and Carolyn Jackson of Weidman. 3 grandchildren: Katherine M. Jackson, Nichole L. Jackson, and Abagail J. Jackson, all of Mt. Pleasant. His sister, Ida Ruth Lenhart of Weidman; 4 brothers: Loren Jackson of Weidman, Victor Jackson of Rosebush, Stuart and Linda Jackson of Mt. Pleasant, and Terry L. Jackson of Grand Rapids. Many nieces and nephews, and best friends, Bert and Connee Ward of Clare. Ducky was preceded in death by a grandson David Earl Kinney, his mother and father Ida and Arthur, sisters: Arlene Arnott, Artina Starkey, and brothers: Wilfred, Elmer Earl, Billy B, and Homer Jackson.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 20, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the Chippewa Indian United Methodist Church with Rev. Owen White-Pigeon and Mr. Alvin Chamberlin officiating. Interment will follow at a later date. Memorial contributions were suggested to the family.

Anthony Mike Michael Scukanec

Anthony Michael (Mike) Scukanec, age 47, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, died on September 16, 2004 at Covenant Health Center in Saginaw, Michigan.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 20, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan with Rev. John Boley and Rev. Ron Thompson officiating. Friends called at the Helms Funeral Home on September 19, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday an hour prior to the services. Friends wishing to remember Mike with a memorial contribution may make a donation to the Leader Dog Program or the Diabetes Institute for Immunology and Transplantation.
Mike was born on September 22, 1956 in Flint, Michigan, the son of Anthony and Patricia (Graham) Scukanec. He grew up in Lapeer, Michigan, and worked in the game division of the Department of Natural Resources for as long as his eyesight would allow. Mike married Gail Patricia Kirkendall on August 20, 1983 in Lapeer, Michigan. This day was one of the happiest days of Mikes life. Mike became a skilled woodworker, creating many fine pieces of furniture and beautiful cabinetry. Mike attended the First United Methodist Church and was a member Mid-Michigan Woodworkers Association and the Isabella Sportsmen Club. Hunting was a passion for Mike and he continued to think and talk about it until his death. Mike also very much enjoyed antique gun collecting, walking in the woods and on the beach, spending time up north and time with his dogs, canoeing and bicycling when possible, reading, and listening to music and news. He will be remembered for the love he had for his wife and sister, his friends, and most especially, life itself.
Mike is survived by his wife, Gail Scukanec of Mt. Pleasant; his sister, Katy Scukanec of Elkhart, Indiana; his beloved dogs, Toby and Poncho; an uncle, Jimmy Bromhead of Cleveland, OH; an aunt, Mary Scukanec of Flint, MI; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Oliver W. Helman
July 8, 1916 - September 13, 2004

Oliver W. Helman, age 88, of Mt. Pleasant, and formerly of Royal Oak, Michigan, died Monday, September 13, 2004 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma, Michigan. Oliver was born on July 8, 1916 in Dollar Bay, Michigan, the son of Erick I. and Ida U. Helman.

On January 3, 1942, Oliver married the former Beulah A. Weller in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Beulah preceded him in death in 1997. He lived in Mt. Pleasant for the past three years moving here from Royal Oak, Michigan. Oliver was a school teacher for 37 years, teaching shop. He was employed by the Hazel Park School District and also taught in Edmore and Empire. Oliver was a veteran of the Army Air Force, serving from September 3, 1942 until February 18, 1946. He was a life member of the Edmore Masonic Lodge, a former member of the Elks Lodge #1610 in Midland, and enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
Oliver is survived by his sister, Evelyn Randall of California; a sister in law and her husband, Dorothy W. and Richard H. Reynolds of Midland; and eleven nieces and nephews. He was precede in death by his parents and his wife, Beulah in 1997.
Graveside services were held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 16, 2004 at Riverside cemetery in Mt. Pleasant with interment following. Rev. Nancy Casey Fulton officiated. Memorial contributions were suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Dr. Joyce Ann Carter
April 20, 1951 - September 9, 2004

Joyce Ann Carter, age 53, of Weidman, died Thursday, September 9, 2004 in Mt. Pleasant. She was born April 20, 1951 in Hastings, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Harry E. and Mary (Sullivan) Weakland.
Joyce graduated from Central Michigan University and on November 22, 1973, she and Gerald C. Carter were married in Mt. Pleasant. She was employed by Central Michigan University from 1975 until retiring as the Director of Academic Assistance Program in March of 2004. Joyce enjoyed bicycling, basket weaving, reading a great deal, cooking, and traveling. She also enjoyed working with people and especially students. Joyce and Gerry enjoyed their pets, two dogs and two cats, in the home that they built.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Gerald C. Carter of Weidman; her mother, Mary Weakland of Naples, Fl; a sister and her husband, Peggy and Dennis Bentley of Naples, FL; a niece, Katie; and a nephew, Patrick. She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 12, 2004 at 7:00 P.M. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Nancy Casey Fulton officiating. Celebration of the Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Marys Catholic Church on the campus of Central Michigan University on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at 10:30 AM with Father Jeff Donner and Rev. Nancy Casey Fulton officiating.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Central Michigan or Life Options at the Listening Ear of Mt. Pleasant.
